The Sunny Land of Adventures

Hello there. Can you feel the warm sunshine on your face? I can. I have the big, cool Atlantic Ocean splashing on one side of me and the warm, gentle Mediterranean Sea on the other. Up north, the tall Pyrenees mountains feel like a cozy scarf around my neck. My fields are dotted with silvery-green olive trees and groves of bright orange trees that smell so sweet. I am a special piece of land, a big peninsula full of stories. I am the Iberian Peninsula, home to the wonderful countries of Spain and Portugal.

My story begins a very, very long time ago. Before there were castles or cities, the very first people lived inside my cozy caves. On my northern coast, thousands and thousands of years ago, some of the world's first artists lived. In a special place called the Cave of Altamira, around 36,000 years ago, they painted amazing pictures right onto my rocky walls. They used red and black colors to draw herds of bison and graceful deer. It was like a secret art gallery hidden deep inside the earth, and I was so proud to be their canvas.

As time went on, new people came to visit and live with me. Long ago, in the 3rd century BCE, clever builders called the Romans arrived. They were amazing engineers. They built strong stone roads that connected my lands, sturdy bridges to cross my rivers, and incredible aqueducts that looked like long, raised pathways to carry fresh water to their towns. Some of their amazing work is still standing today. Many years later, in the year 711 CE, explorers arrived from North Africa. They brought brilliant new ideas about math and science. They also built some of the most beautiful places you can imagine, like palaces with peaceful gardens and bubbling fountains. One of them, the Alhambra, is like a dream. They also built amazing places to worship, like the Great Mosque of Córdoba, which they began building in 785 CE, with hundreds of red and white striped arches.

My shores have always looked out at the wide, sparkling sea, and that view made people dream of big adventures. I became a launchpad for brave sailors who wanted to see what was on the other side of the ocean. They built strong ships and packed them with supplies, ready to explore the unknown. One very famous journey began from one of my ports on August 3rd, 1492. A sailor named Christopher Columbus and his crew waved goodbye and sailed west, hoping to find a new way to faraway lands. Explorers from Portugal also set sail from my coasts, making daring voyages down and around the giant continent of Africa.

Today, my heart beats with music, laughter, and joy. In Spain, you can hear the passionate sounds of flamenco music and watch dancers clap their hands and stomp their feet. In Portugal, you can listen to the beautiful, thoughtful songs called fado. My kitchens are filled with the smells of delicious food, and my streets are filled with happy festivals and parades. I am a place that shows how many different people and ideas can come together to create something beautiful. My story is written in my ancient stones, my lively songs, and the happy smiles of everyone who calls me home.
