A Sunny Hello from Italy
Imagine a giant boot stretching out into the warm, sparkly sea. That's me. My toe looks like it's about to kick a big soccer ball, which is really the island of Sicily. The sun always seems to be shining on my green hills and ancient cities. If you close your eyes, you can almost smell yummy pizza baking in a hot oven and hear happy voices chatting and laughing in my town squares. I am full of sunshine, delicious food, and wonderful stories. Hello. I am Italy.
My story began a very, very long time ago. One of my most famous cities, Rome, was started way back in the year 753 BCE. That was the time of the Ancient Romans, who were so clever and busy. They built huge, strong buildings that you can still see today, which makes me feel very proud. Have you ever heard of the Colosseum? It's a giant, round arena that opened in the year 80 CE. It was a place for big shows with thousands of people cheering from the seats. The Romans also built amazing aqueducts. These were like long stone rivers held high in the sky, and they carried fresh water for miles to keep everyone in the cities healthy and happy. I watched as my hills and valleys became home to these incredible creations.
After many hundreds of years, a new, exciting time began. It was called the Renaissance, which started around the 1400s. Renaissance is a fancy word that means 'rebirth,' and it felt just like that. It was as if everyone woke up full of amazing new ideas about art and science. I was filled with famous artists like Leonardo da Vinci, who painted the famous Mona Lisa, and Michelangelo, who painted a beautiful ceiling in a chapel that looked like a window into heaven. He also carved statues from stone that looked so real you'd think they could get up and walk away. I was so happy to be the home for so much beauty.
For a long, long time, I wasn't one big country like I am today. I was made of many separate parts, like pieces of a puzzle. But the people who lived on my land felt like they were part of one big family, and they wanted all my puzzle pieces to come together. They worked very hard, and finally, on March 17th, 1861, I was officially united as one country called the Kingdom of Italy. Today, I am still one big family. People know me for my fast cars, my beautiful fashion, and my sweet, creamy gelato. But most of all, I am a place where family is the most important thing. My story is always growing, and I love sharing my sunshine, my art, and my history with everyone who comes to visit.
