The story

The Stone Kingdom in the Jungle

Imagine a place deep inside a warm, green jungle, where giant trees wrap their thick roots around ancient stone walls. Towers carved from rock reach for the sun, and huge, gentle stone faces smile down at you from every corner. The air is filled with the buzz of insects and the calls of colorful birds. If you could touch the stones, they would feel warm from the sun. I am the Khmer Empire, a great and powerful kingdom that lived long ago in the land we now call Cambodia. My story is written in these very stones, waiting for you to discover it.

My journey began a very long time ago, in the year 802 CE. A wise and powerful king named Jayavarman the 2nd united many different groups of people who lived in the land. He stood before them and declared himself the one true ruler, and that is when my great story started. My people were so clever. They were brilliant farmers and amazing engineers. They figured out how to control the water from the rain and rivers by building amazing waterways called canals and huge reservoirs called barays. This smart system brought water to all their rice fields, making sure everyone in my kingdom had plenty of yummy food to eat, and helping me grow strong and mighty.

My kings wanted to show their love for their gods and create a special place for them on Earth. So, they built magnificent temples that were the heart of my cities. In the early 12th century, a wonderful king named Suryavarman the 2nd decided to build my most famous temple. He called it Angkor Wat. It looks like a giant mountain made of stone, with five towers that touch the sky and beautiful pictures carved all over its walls telling amazing stories. A little later, in the late 12th century, another great king, Jayavarman the 7th, built a whole new city. He named it Angkor Thom. Right in the middle, he built the Bayon temple, which is famous for the giant, smiling stone faces that watch over everything with a kind and peaceful look.

Like all things, my time as a ruling empire came to an end around the 15th century. Slowly, the busy jungle grew back, and its green leaves and twisting vines covered my stone cities, hiding me away for a very long time. It was as if I had fallen into a deep sleep. But my spirit and my stone cities were never truly lost. Today, my beautiful temples have been uncovered and stand tall for everyone to see. I am a symbol of pride for the Cambodian people and a place of wonder for the whole world. I remind everyone that when people work together with big dreams, they can create something beautiful that lasts for thousands of years.
