The story

The City of Sunshine and Pizza

I sparkle and shine next to a big, blue sea. A sleepy mountain watches over me all day long. The air here smells so yummy, like red tomatoes and warm, fresh bread. Hello. I am the city of Naples. I live in a country shaped like a boot called Italy. It is so nice to meet you.

My story started a long, long time ago. Friends from a place called Greece sailed their boats across the water to find a new home. In the 8th century BCE, they built their houses right here by the sea. They loved the warm sun. A little later, around the year 475 BCE, I was given a brand new name. They called me Neapolis, which means “New City.” I have watched the sun rise and set for thousands and thousands of years.

Do you know what I am famous for? Pizza. It is my favorite thing to share. Once, on June 11th, 1889, a baker who lived here made a very special pizza just for a queen named Margherita. He made it look like the flag of Italy. He used red tomatoes, white cheese, and green basil leaves. The queen loved it. Today, families laugh and sing happy songs in my streets. They take sunny walks by the water. And my big mountain friend, Vesuvius, still watches over everyone.

I am a city full of stories, sunshine, and the best pizza in the whole world. I feel so happy when new friends visit me and share a yummy meal. I will always be here by the sea, waiting to share my warm sunshine with you. Come say ciao.
