The story

Olympia: Home of the Games

In a lush green valley in Greece, nestled between two rivers, the sun warms my ancient stones. If you listen closely, you might hear the whisper of the wind through my olive groves, telling stories of heroes and champions from long, long ago. For centuries, I have been a place of peace, strength, and celebration. People came from all over the world to test their skills and honor the gods. I am a place of legends. I am Olympia.

I was created as a special sanctuary to honor the most powerful of all the Greek gods, Zeus. It was here, in the year 776 BCE, that the very first Olympic Games took place. It started small, with just a single footrace, but it was the beginning of something that would last for over a thousand years. To make sure everyone could attend, a sacred truce called the 'Ekecheiria' was declared. This meant all wars had to stop, allowing athletes and their families to travel safely to my grounds. As the games grew, so did I. Beautiful buildings began to rise from the earth. Around the year 590 BCE, the lovely Temple of Hera was built, one of my oldest and most cherished structures. Later, around 470 BCE, builders began work on my most magnificent building: the grand Temple of Zeus. Inside, there was something truly breathtaking. A famous sculptor named Phidias created a giant, magnificent statue of Zeus around the year 435 BCE. It was made of ivory and gold and was so incredible that it became known as one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. Over the centuries, the games expanded to include wrestling, boxing, chariot races, and many other contests of skill and strength.

My time of glory, however, came to an end. In the year 393 CE, a Roman emperor named Theodosius I ordered that the games must stop. I fell silent. Without the crowds and the champions, I became lonely. Then, nature took its course. Powerful earthquakes shook my foundations, and floods from the rivers washed over me, burying my temples and stadiums under layers of earth. I slept under the ground for more than a thousand years, a forgotten memory. But a place of such importance could not stay hidden forever. In 1875 CE, archaeologists with shovels and brushes began to carefully uncover my secrets. They found the remains of my temples, my gymnasium, and the very track where athletes once raced. Today, I am a treasured ruin, but my spirit is more alive than ever. Since 1936 CE, a special ceremony takes place here before every modern Olympic Games. The Olympic Flame is lit using the sun's rays, right here among my ancient stones, and begins its journey around the world. I remind everyone that the ideals of peace, friendship, and striving to be your best are timeless.
