The story

The Story of Oslo: A City of Vikings and Peace

I am a city where cool sea breezes tickle my shores and tall green forests are my backyard. In my heart, colorful wooden houses stand beside shiny glass buildings. Ships with big white sails glide into my harbor, bringing friends from all over the world to visit me. I am a place full of wonder and adventure. Hello. I am Oslo, the capital of Norway.

My story begins a very long time ago, in the age of Vikings. Around the year 1040, a brave Viking king named Harald Hardråde sailed along my waters and thought, “This is the perfect spot for a new town.”. I watched as Viking longships, with fierce dragon heads carved on their fronts, sailed silently up my long, watery arm, which is called a fjord. The Vikings built wooden homes and a big market where they could trade goods like fish and fur. Slowly, I began to grow from a small, quiet settlement into a busy, happy place where families lived and worked.

But one day in 1624, something terrible happened. A great fire swept through my wooden streets. I was so sad to see all my old buildings turn to ash. Everything was smoky and gray. But a kind king named Christian IV, who was the king of both Denmark and Norway, came to help. He said, “Do not worry. We will rebuild you, stronger and safer than before.”. He moved me a little closer to a big stone fortress for protection and made my streets wider. He even gave me a new name after himself: Christiania. For over 300 years, that was my name. It wasn't until January 1st, 1925, that the people decided to give me my old, cozy name back: Oslo.

Today, I am a city famous for peace. Every year on December 10th, I have the very special honor of hosting the Nobel Peace Prize ceremony. It’s a wonderful event that celebrates people who work hard to make the world a better and kinder place. I am also home to amazing sights, like my Opera House, which opened on April 12th, 2008. It looks just like a giant white iceberg that has slid into the water, and you can even walk all over its roof. I love being a place where you can ski in the snowy forest in the morning and visit a museum full of Viking ships in the afternoon. I am a city where nature and imagination live side-by-side, and I hope you'll come visit me and make your own happy memories.
