Just want Rainbow Mountain?
High up in the Andes Mountains of Peru, the air is thin and chilly, and the sun feels closer and brighter than anywhere else. For millions of years, I slept peacefully, feeling the clouds drift by like soft, cottony sheep. Then, one day, the world began to notice me. They saw a landscape painted with stripes of terracotta red, sunny yellow, lavender purple, and soft green. I wasn't like other mountains, gray and rocky. I looked like a secret painting that the Earth had kept hidden. At first, people who saw me didn't know what to call me. I looked like a mountain wearing a rainbow blanket. It was a good name, because that’s exactly how I feel. The local people who have known me forever call me Vinicunca. But today, travelers from all over the world call me Rainbow Mountain.
My story is a recipe that took millions of years to perfect. It began around 24 million years ago, when the Earth was busy pushing and folding the land to create the mighty Andes. Imagine someone baking a giant, colorful layer cake. That’s a bit like how I was made. First, there was a layer of reddish mud, rich with iron. Then came a layer of yellow sand, followed by layers of different stones and clays, each with its own special minerals. Over millions of years, these layers stacked one on top of the other. But my recipe had a twist. Powerful forces deep within the Earth didn't just stack my layers; they pushed and squeezed them until they tilted completely sideways. So instead of flat layers, I had vertical stripes. For millions more years, the wind and rain acted like artists, patiently carving and polishing me, slowly washing away the dull outer rock to show the brilliant colors that were hiding underneath.

For most of history, my colorful secret was safe with the local Quechua people. They always knew I was special and respected me as a sacred place, an ‘Apu,’ which is a spirit that protects them. But even they couldn't always see my stripes. You see, I spent thousands of years tucked under a thick, white blanket of snow and ice. I was a rainbow sleeping under the snow. But slowly, the world began to get a little warmer. Year after year, my snowy blanket started to melt, shrinking a little more each summer. Around the year 2015, my blanket had melted so much that my colors were brighter and clearer than ever before. Word spread quickly. People saw pictures and couldn't believe their eyes. Travelers started making the long journey high into the mountains to see me. It felt like I was waking up from a very long nap and finally getting to show the world my true, vibrant self.
Now, my life is filled with new sounds and sights. Almost every day, I watch as people hike up my slopes, their breath making little clouds in the chilly air. I see the look of pure wonder on their faces when they reach the top and gaze at my colorful stripes. I hear happy chatter in dozens of different languages and the constant, gentle click of cameras trying to capture my beauty. I am no longer a secret, but a destination. I love being a place that connects people to the power and artistry of nature. I am a reminder that our planet has incredible, beautiful secrets, painted with minerals and carved by time. I hope that when people see me, they remember to look for the hidden wonders in their own world and help protect our amazing planet for everyone to enjoy. After all, there are many more secrets waiting to be discovered.
