The story

The Whispering Stones of the Roman Forum

Hello there. Can you feel the warm sunshine on your face? I am a wide, open space right in the middle of a very busy city. All around me, you can see ancient stones and broken columns reaching for the sky. Sometimes, friendly cats take naps in the shade of my old walls. Visitors from all over the world walk on my old paths, their voices whispering like the wind. I am not just one building, but a whole collection of memories and secrets waiting to be discovered. I have been here for a very, very long time. I am the Roman Forum, the heart of ancient Rome.

Long, long ago, I wasn't a grand square at all. Around the 7th century BCE, I was just a muddy, swampy field nestled between seven green hills. It was too wet for anyone to build anything here. But then, some very clever kings had a big idea. Around the year 600 BCE, they built a huge drain called the Cloaca Maxima. It was like a giant straw that slurped up all the water and made the ground dry and strong. After that, everything changed for me. I became a bustling marketplace. People came from all over to buy yummy food, sell beautiful crafts, and meet their friends to chat. I was the town square, the most exciting place to be in all of Rome. I was where the city’s story truly began to grow.

For hundreds and hundreds of years, I was the most important place in the whole world. This was my most glorious time, during the Roman Republic and then the Roman Empire. Grand buildings with tall, strong columns were built all around me. I had beautiful temples, like the Temple of Saturn, which was rebuilt in 42 BCE. That's where Rome kept all of its treasure safe. I also had a special building called the Curia, where wise senators met to make important decisions that changed the world. Sometimes, famous leaders like Julius Caesar would stand right here and give powerful speeches to huge crowds. When brave generals came home from winning battles, they would march under my special arches, like the Arch of Titus, which was built in 82 CE. The whole city would cheer for them. I felt so proud to be the center of it all.

But stories have sad parts, too. After the great Roman Empire fell around the 5th century CE, people started to forget about me. The cheering crowds grew quiet, and my beautiful buildings slowly crumbled and fell apart. Over many years, dirt and grass covered my stone streets until I was completely buried. For a long, long time, I was hidden and forgotten. People who walked above me didn't even know I was here. They just saw a grassy field and called me the 'Cow Field' because cows would graze here. But then, much later, starting in the 18th and 19th centuries, curious people called archaeologists came with their shovels and brushes. They began to dig carefully, uncovering my lost secrets and bringing my amazing story back into the light.

Today, I am a peaceful place where you can walk through history itself. You can stand on the very stones where famous Romans once stood and imagine the busy, noisy city I used to be. I am not just a pile of old ruins. I am a storybook made of stone, and my pages are open for everyone to read. I love sharing my amazing past with every new friend, like you, who comes to visit me from all over the world.
