The story

The Golden Heart of Kyiv

In the heart of a big, busy city called Kyiv, I stand tall and proud. My golden domes sparkle in the sun like shiny helmets against the bright blue sky. My walls are painted in beautiful green and white, and when my bells ring, their happy sound fills the air for everyone to hear. I have watched over this city for a very, very long time, holding stories inside my strong walls. People come from all over the world just to see my shimmering colors and feel the peace inside me. I am Saint Sophia Cathedral, and I have a story that is almost a thousand years old.

My story begins with a brave prince named Yaroslav the Wise. He was the leader of the land, and he had just won a very important battle. He was so thankful that he wanted to build something wonderful to show his gratitude. So, he began building me way back in the 11th century, around the year 1037. He wanted me to be the most beautiful church anyone had ever seen. He invited amazing artists to come and decorate my inside walls. They didn't use paint. Instead, they used thousands of tiny, sparkling pieces of colored glass to create pictures called mosaics. These pictures glitter when the light touches them. The most famous mosaic of all is of a lady called the Virgin Oranta. She stands with her arms raised, and many people believe that as long as she is here, she will protect the city of Kyiv from harm.

My life has been very long, and it wasn't always easy. I have stood strong through big storms and scary times. I even survived attacks and fires, like a big invasion in the year 1240 that damaged many buildings around me. But I remained standing. As time went on, people wanted to make me even more beautiful. In the 17th and 18th centuries, builders gave my outside walls a grand new look. They added more domes and decorations in a fancy style called Ukrainian Baroque. Then, in the year 1934, I was given a new job. I became a museum so that everyone, including children just like you, could come inside and learn all about my long and important history.

Today, I am more than just a beautiful building. In the year 1990, I was given a very special title. I became a UNESCO World Heritage site. That means I am considered a treasure for the whole world to protect and enjoy. I am a symbol of strength and beauty for the people of Ukraine. I remind everyone that even after many hundreds of years, hope and art can shine brightly for all to see.
