The story

Salzburg: The City of Salt and Song

Fresh, cool air tickles your nose as it drifts down from the towering Alps that surround me. From my streets, you can look up and see a mighty white fortress perched on a hill, watching over everything like a silent guardian. The sound of church bells often rings through the air, their music echoing across the sparkling Salzach River that flows right through my heart. For centuries, my lanes and squares have been filled with melodies, from the grandest symphonies to the simplest folk songs. It feels like music is baked into my very stones and carried on every breeze. I have many stories to tell, filled with powerful princes, precious salt, and unforgettable songs. I am Salzburg, a city in the heart of Austria.

My name tells my oldest story. 'Salz' is the German word for salt, and 'Burg' means fortress. Long before there were refrigerators, salt was incredibly important for keeping food fresh, which made it as valuable as gold. People even called it 'white gold'. This precious salt, mined from the mountains nearby, made me a very wealthy and important place. My story began a very long time ago, when the Romans built a town here called Iuvavum. But my true rebirth happened around the year 696 CE, when a bishop named Saint Rupert arrived. He helped organize the salt trade, and I began to grow strong. To protect this wealth, my people started building the massive Hohensalzburg Fortress high on the hill in the year 1077. Over the next several hundred years, powerful leaders called Prince-Archbishops ruled me. They used the wealth from the salt to build magnificent cathedrals with towering domes, grand palaces with beautiful gardens, and charming squares with bubbling fountains, turning me into the jewel you see today.

While salt made me rich, music made me famous. On a chilly day, the 27th of January, in the year 1756, a baby was born in a bright yellow house on a street called Getreidegasse. His name was Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, and he would grow up to fill my halls and chapels with some of the most beautiful music the world has ever known. Even as a little boy, Wolfgang was a prodigy, which means he had an amazing, natural talent. He could play musical instruments perfectly before he could even read many words. He started composing his own music when he was only five years old. He and his sister traveled all over Europe, performing for kings and queens who were amazed by his genius. His music was full of joy, drama, and breathtaking beauty. You can still visit the house where he was born today. Because of him, my reputation as a city of music was cemented forever, and people from all over the world come to walk the same streets where his melodies first came to life.

Centuries after Mozart, a new song echoed from my hills. This was the story of the von Trapp family, whose love of music and daring escape was told to the world in a famous movie called 'The Sound of Music'. In 1965, filmmakers came here to capture my beauty, filming in my lush Mirabell Gardens, in my grand squares, and on the green hillsides that surround me. The movie shared my landscapes with people everywhere, and soon, visitors were flocking to see the places where the von Trapp children sang. But my love for performance is not just for the movies. Every summer since the year 1920, I host the Salzburg Festival, a huge celebration of opera, concerts, and plays that attracts the world’s best performers. My history and culture are so special that in 1996, my historic city center was named a UNESCO World Heritage Site. This is a special honor that means I am protected so that people can enjoy my stories and beauty for many, many years to come.

I am a city where history speaks through ancient stones and music floats on the breeze. My story is written in the walls of my fortress, the notes of Mozart's symphonies, and the joyful songs from my hills. I hope you will come and visit me one day. You can listen for the echo of a melody composed long ago or imagine the von Trapp family singing in my gardens. I love sharing my stories and my songs with everyone who walks my streets. My greatest hope is that my long history of creativity will inspire you to find the music in your own life.
