The story

A Story from the City by the Bay

I wake up covered in a soft, cool blanket of fog. The fog feels like a gentle hug. I have tall, rolling hills that are fun to climb and sparkling blue water all around me. A giant, red-orange bridge stretches across my bay like a big, friendly hello. It loves to say hello to all the little boats that sail under it. Can you guess who I am. I am the city of San Francisco.

For a very long, long time, the Ohlone people lived on my sunny hills. They were my first friends. Then, in the year 1776, explorers in big ships sailed to my shores and built a small town. It was a quiet place. But one day, on January 24th, 1848, someone found shiny gold nearby. Wow. So many people rushed here to look for treasure. They came in boats and wagons, all dreaming of gold. I grew from a tiny village into a big, busy city super fast, like a flower blooming in the sun.

I had a big shaky earthquake on April 18th, 1906, but everyone worked together to build me back up, stronger than ever. Today, you can ride my special cable cars. They started running on August 2nd, 1873, and they go 'clang, clang, clang' up my steep streets. My famous Golden Gate Bridge opened on May 27th, 1937, and it welcomes people from all over the world. I love being a home for colorful houses, happy sea lions that bark hello, and big dreams. I am a place where new ideas are born and everyone can feel welcome.
