Just want Stratford-upon-Avon?
Imagine a gentle river where graceful white swans swim by every day. Along the riverbanks, you can see cozy houses with black wooden beams and white walls, looking like a storybook picture. Flowers bloom in their gardens, and the streets are filled with the happy sounds of people exploring. I am a place where one of the world's greatest stories began a very, very long time ago. I watched it all happen, from the very beginning. I am the town of Stratford-upon-Avon.
My life as a busy town started long, long ago. In the year 1196, a king named Richard I gave me a special paper called a charter. He said I could have a big market where farmers and craftsmen could sell their goods. I became a bustling, happy place full of life. Many years later, on April 23rd, 1564, a very special baby boy was born right here on my streets. His name was William Shakespeare. As a boy, William loved to run through my lanes and across my fields. He would often watch traveling actors put on exciting shows right in the town square. He saw stories about brave knights, funny clowns, and powerful kings and queens. All these sights filled his head with wonderful ideas and big dreams. He knew, even then, that he wanted to tell stories, too.
When William grew up, he moved to the big city of London to follow his dreams. He became a writer, and soon everyone knew his name. He wrote incredible plays that made people laugh, cry, and think. Even though he was famous in London, he always said I was his true home. He missed my quiet river and friendly streets. In 1597, he bought a grand house here for his family and called it New Place. He proved that no matter how far you go, you can always love the place where you started. His words traveled all over the world, but his heart always stayed with me. When his life of storytelling was over in 1616, he came back to rest here forever.

Today, my story continues, and I am still full of William's magic. People from all over the world visit me to walk on the same cobblestone streets that he did. They can see the house where he was born and watch his amazing plays at my famous Royal Shakespeare Theatre right by the river. I am so proud to help keep his wonderful stories alive for everyone to enjoy. I hope that by sharing his story, I can inspire new dreamers every single day.
