Just want Sundarbans?
Can you imagine a forest that breathes with the ocean's tides. Where the land and water dance together every single day. That's me. My special trees, called mangroves, have roots that poke up from the muddy ground like little snorkels, so they can breathe when the water rises. If you listen closely, you can hear birds chirping happy songs and monkeys chattering in my branches. And if you are very quiet and very lucky, you might even see a famous striped cat with orange and black fur padding silently through the shadows. I am a place of wonder and life. I am the Sundarbans, which means 'beautiful forest' in the Bengali language, and I have a long story to tell you.
My story began thousands and thousands of years ago. I wasn't built by people with bricks or tools. Instead, I was born from the rich, soft mud carried by three great rivers. They brought tiny bits of earth all the way from the mountains and laid them down where they met the sea, creating me. For centuries, people have lived near my waters, fishing in my streams and gathering honey from my trees. They learned to live with my changing tides. Then, a long time ago, people realized I was a very special place that needed to be kept safe. On a very important day in 1875, they decided to protect me and called me a 'Reserved Forest'. It was like a big promise to make sure my trees wouldn’t be cut down and my animals would always have a home. Later, in 1973, an extra-special part of me was given a new job. It became the Sundarban Tiger Reserve, a safe space just for my magnificent Bengal tigers to roam and live freely.
The Forest That Breathes

I am a home to so many amazing animals. My Bengal tigers aren't afraid of the water; they are powerful swimmers. Spotted deer peek out from behind my trees, and sneaky fishing cats hunt for their dinner along my riverbanks. High in the branches, you can see bright blue kingfishers diving for fish. But I have another very important job. My tangled mangrove roots act like a giant, strong net, holding all the mud and land together. When big storms, called cyclones, come from the ocean, my roots and trees stand strong. They protect the villages and people who live nearby from the wind and waves. Because I am so important and unique, the world decided to give me a special award. In 1987, my part in the country of India was named a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Then, in 1997, my part in Bangladesh got the same honor. It’s like getting a giant gold star for being one of the most amazing natural treasures on Earth.
I am more than just trees and water. I am a living, breathing example of how everything in nature works together perfectly. I teach people how important it is to protect our beautiful planet. My promise for the future is to keep my trees strong, my waters clean, and all my animals safe. I want to continue being a beautiful, helpful forest for everyone, so that children just like you can learn from me for many, many more years to come. I will always be here, a beautiful forest where the tigers swim and the trees breathe with the tides.
