Just want Sydney Opera House?
I sit right where the sunny land meets the sparkling blue water. My roofs are giant and white, curving toward the sky like huge seashells resting on the shore. Some people say I look like a fleet of great sailing ships, ready to catch the wind and glide across the harbor. I listen to the seagulls calling good morning and the gentle splash of waves against my steps. All day long, I watch the little green ferries and big, important boats sail by in a beautiful city called Sydney. I am a house made not of wood or brick, but of dreams and music. I am the Sydney Opera House.
My story began with a wonderful idea. A long time ago, the people of Sydney said, “We need a special place for everyone to enjoy music, opera, and plays!” So, in the year 1957, they held a big contest and invited architects from all over the world to share their designs. A man from Denmark named Jørn Utzon sent in a drawing that was different from all the others. His idea was inspired by nature—by the shape of orange peels, he once said. Everyone thought his design was the most beautiful. But building me was like solving a giant, tricky puzzle. My swooping, curvy roofs were very hard to build. For years, builders and engineers worked together, starting in 1959. They scratched their heads and tried many ideas. “How can we make these curves so they are strong enough to stand forever?” they asked. It took a lot of teamwork and very smart thinking to finally figure it out.
After many years of hard work, I was finally finished. In 1973, there was a grand party to celebrate my opening. Even a queen came to visit me. I felt so proud and excited to finally welcome people inside my shells. Inside, I am not just one big room. I have many different halls and theaters. In one, a big orchestra plays powerful music that makes you feel happy or sad. In another, singers in amazing costumes tell stories through song. And in another, graceful ballet dancers leap and twirl across the stage. I am a house full of stories and wonder, a place where dreams come to life. I stand here by the water to remind everyone that even the most difficult puzzle can be solved with a big idea, teamwork, and the courage to create something the world has never seen before.
