The story

Timbuktu: The City of Sand and Stories

The sun makes me warm and sparkly. I am made of earth and sand, right where the big Sahara Desert says hello to the Niger River. Can you hear that. It’s the soft padding of camel feet walking across the sand. They bring special things, like salt that looks like crystals and gold that shines like the sun. People gather here to share stories and songs under the big, blue sky. I have been here for a very, very long time, holding secrets in my sandy walls. I am Timbuktu, a city of stories and secrets.

A long, long time ago, in the 12th century, I was just a small, quiet camp. But soon, friends from all over came to visit me. They brought shiny gold and sparkly salt to trade. It was a busy, happy place. But my most important treasure wasn’t the gold or the salt. My best treasure was knowledge. I had so many wonderful books. Starting in the 14th century, I had a special school called the University of Sankore where wise people came to read and share their big ideas. In the year 1324, a very kind king named Mansa Musa came to see me. He was so happy to see all my books. He helped build beautiful, tall buildings called mosques where people could come together and feel peaceful.

For hundreds of years, I kept all my precious books safe. They were filled with beautiful poems, amazing numbers, and stories about the stars. My books are like a big hug from the past, telling us about people who lived long ago. Today, you can find me in a country called Mali. Some of my sandy walls are old, but my story is still strong. I am here to remind you that learning new things is the best treasure of all. Sharing our ideas and stories makes the whole world a brighter and happier place for everyone.
