Just want Tropical Rainforest?
Listen closely. Can you hear the gentle pitter-patter of rain dripping from my giant leaves? A constant hum fills the air, made by thousands of busy insects buzzing from flower to flower. Suddenly, a bright-colored bird calls out a cheerful song from high above. The air here is warm and feels like a big, gentle hug, thick with the smell of damp earth and sweet flowers. Everywhere you look, there is green—so many shades of green you can't even count them. I am a world alive with sound and color, a secret, ancient place full of life. I am the Tropical Rainforest.
My story is one of the oldest on Earth. I am millions and millions of years old. I was here a long, long time ago, even when giant dinosaurs stomped through my trees around 70 million years ago. I am built like a very tall building with different floors, or layers. Way up at the top is my emergent layer, where the tallest trees poke out into the sunshine. Below that is my leafy roof, called the canopy. It’s so thick with leaves that it’s like a giant green umbrella. Monkeys swing from branch to branch here, and colorful toucans flash their bright beaks. Under the canopy is the shady understory, where it’s darker and quieter. And at the very bottom is the busy forest floor, where all sorts of creatures crawl and scurry. I am a home with many levels, and every single one is filled with amazing life.
While I am full of amazing animals, I am also a home for people. For thousands and thousands of years, special groups of people called Indigenous peoples have lived within my green embrace. In some of my biggest parts, like the Amazon, they have been my friends and caretakers for at least 15,000 years. They know all my secrets. They know which plants can be used for medicine and which fruits are sweet to eat. They don’t just live in me; they live with me. They listen to my whispers and take care of my animals and trees, making sure we all live together in harmony, like a big, happy family.

I have a very important job for the whole world. Some people call me the 'lungs of the Earth.' Do you know why? Because just like your lungs, I breathe. I take in the old, stuffy air that people and machines make, and I breathe out fresh, clean air called oxygen that everyone needs to live. It’s a big responsibility. I also give wonderful gifts to people everywhere. The delicious chocolate you love comes from my cacao beans. The sweet bananas you eat for a snack grow on my plants. Even some important medicines that help people when they are sick come from my special leaves and roots. I love sharing my treasures with the world.
To keep doing my important job, I need help to stay healthy and strong. The good news is that people all over the world, including thoughtful kids like you, are learning how to protect me. On special days like World Environment Day on June 5th, everyone remembers to care for our planet. By working together, we can make sure I keep growing for millions of more years, a beautiful green home for everyone to share and love.
