The story

The Land of the Golden Sunflowers

Imagine standing in a field so big it touches the sky, surrounded by millions of tall, golden sunflowers all turning their faces to the sun. You can smell the rich, dark soil and hear the busy sounds of cities humming in the distance. I am a big, beautiful country right in the heart of Europe, where these golden fields stretch for miles and great rivers flow. My story is very old and full of courage and beauty. I am Ukraine.

My story really began a very long time ago, with a powerful kingdom called Kyivan Rus'. Around the 9th century, my capital city, Kyiv, became a shining star for everyone to see. A wise and thoughtful ruler named Volodymyr the Great lived there. In the year 988 CE, he decided that all the people in the kingdom should share one faith, and he introduced Christianity. To celebrate this, amazing churches were built with shiny golden domes that glittered in the sun like giant drops of honey. You can still see them standing tall and proud in Kyiv today, reminding everyone of my long and important history.

Many years later, starting around the 15th century, a group of very brave warriors called the Cossacks lived on my lands. Oh, they were famous for their love of freedom. They believed that everyone should be able to make their own choices and protect their home. They rode their strong horses across my wide-open plains, which are called steppes, their hair flying in the wind. The Cossacks built strong wooden forts to protect their families and my borders from anyone who might try to harm them. They became a symbol of my strong, independent, and unbreakable spirit, and their stories of bravery are still told today.

My journey as a country had some very difficult and sad times, but my people never, ever stopped dreaming of being their own free and independent country. They held this dream in their hearts for many years. Then, on a sunny day, August 24th, 1991, that wonderful dream finally came true. I became an independent country once again. My flag, with its bright blue and sunny yellow stripes, flew high for the whole world to see. It was a picture of my blue sky over my golden wheat fields.

Today, my heart is full of art, music, and wonderful traditions that have been passed down for many, many years. My people love to sing beautiful songs and paint amazing Easter eggs called 'pysanky' with incredible patterns. They are known all over the world for their strength, their creativity, and their warm, welcoming smiles. I am a land of great courage and endless hope. My story of fighting for freedom and creating beauty continues to inspire people everywhere, showing them that a strong spirit can never be broken.
