The Giggling Golden River
I wiggle and flow like a long, golden ribbon across a big, beautiful land. My water isn't blue like many other rivers. It’s a sparkly, golden-brown, like sunshine mixed with sweet honey. I giggle as I travel, carrying special mud that makes the land around me super happy and ready to grow yummy things. It feels like I'm giving the earth a big, cozy hug. I love to sparkle in the sun for all the little birds and fish who call me home. Can you guess my name? I am the Yellow River.
For thousands and thousands of years, way back to a time around 4000 BCE, I have been a special friend to people. Families came to live near me. They built their cozy homes right by my side. They knew my special mud, called silt, was like a vitamin for their gardens. It helped them grow yummy food to eat, like vegetables and grains. Sometimes, big rains came and made me get too full. I would spill over my sides a little bit. But the people were very smart. They worked together, like a big team, to build strong walls to keep everyone safe and dry. They called me the 'Mother River' because I took care of so many people, just like a mommy does.
Today, I am still a very busy river. I am still helping people every single day. I help farmers grow their crops to feed their families. I give water to big, busy cities where lots of people live and play. Big boats float on my back, carrying important things from one place to another, and little children wave hello to me from my shores. I love sharing my golden waters and my old, happy stories. I will keep flowing and helping people with a smile for many, many more years to come.
