Boredom
Hello! I’m Boredom. You might know me as that restless, antsy feeling you get on a long, rainy afternoon when there’s ‘nothing to do.’ I am that big sigh when you’ve finished all your games and are just staring at the ceiling, wondering what could possibly happen next. I’m the feeling of being stuck in a waiting room, like on the 3rd of the month, where the clock ticks so slowly it feels like it’s moving backward. That feeling of waiting and wishing for something different to happen is me.
When I show up, everything can seem dull and gray. I can make you wander from room to room, picking things up and putting them right back down without a reason. You might feel a little grumpy or frustrated, like your brain is a TV stuck on a fuzzy channel where you can't find anything interesting to watch. This is the part of me that feels challenging, where you wish for anything exciting to happen. It's the moment you realize you've checked the fridge for the fifth time, hoping something new and interesting has magically appeared.
But here’s my secret: I’m actually the quiet before a great idea. I give your busy brain a chance to rest and daydream. Remember that one Saturday, the 12th of the month, when you felt me creeping in? You started doodling on a scrap of paper, and soon you had designed a whole city for superheroes, complete with tall buildings and secret hideouts. That was me, clearing out all the noise and distractions so your imagination could take over and build something new.
I'm not here to be a pest. I am your brain’s chance to recharge and get creative. I help you discover what you truly enjoy when no one is telling you what to do. I continue to help people today by pushing them to invent, to write stories, and to simply look out the window and wonder. That quiet moment of wondering is where the best adventures often begin. I am still learning how my quiet moments can lead to big ideas, and my story reminds you that sometimes, doing nothing is the start of doing something amazing.
