Kindness Online
Hello. I am the feeling you get when you decide to be an upstander, not a bystander. You can call me Kindness Online, and I am the opposite of cyberbullying. I emerge from the core of empathy, showing up when mean comments, harmful rumors, or embarrassing photos are posted on social media, in games, or in group chats. I exist in the choices you make when you see something hurtful. I am the supportive message you send to a friend who is having a tough time, offering them a private space to feel seen and heard. I am the positive comment you leave on someone's post to lift them up. I am also the courage it takes to report something that crosses a line, protecting others from harm.
My story often begins when you are scrolling through your feed or participating in a group chat and you see something that doesn't feel right. Perhaps a classmate is being deliberately left out of a conversation, or you notice a stream of cruel comments under a video someone proudly shared. That uncomfortable feeling is your cue to invite me in. You can make a difference by sending a private message to the person being targeted, simply letting them know you are there for them and that they are not alone. You can also actively change the direction of a negative conversation by posting something positive and supportive, shifting the focus away from cruelty. Another powerful way you can act is by telling a trusted adult, like a parent or teacher, about what is happening so they can help. Each one of these small actions creates a ripple, spreading compassion and making the internet a safer, more welcoming place for everyone involved.
