The story

I Am Being Kind Online

Hello. I am the feeling you get when you choose to be kind online. You might not think of me as a person, but I am the power behind every positive comment, every supportive message, and every time you stand up for someone on the internet. My purpose is to help make the online world a safer and happier place for everyone. I do this by working against my opposite, which is known as Cyberbullying, to make sure respect and friendship can grow.

I want to show you how I work through a story about a boy named Leo. He loved playing an online game, but one day he saw another player, Mia, getting made fun of in the game chat. The comments were mean, and Leo knew they were wrong. He felt unsure what to do. That’s when I stepped in to help him. Instead of joining in with the unkindness or just staying silent, Leo decided to use me to make a difference. He sent Mia a private message telling her that he thought she was a great player. He also asked if she wanted to team up. Then, he used the game's 'report' button to let the moderators know about the mean behavior so they could handle it.

Leo’s choice to be kind created a positive ripple effect. After Mia received his kind message, she felt so much better and realized she was not alone. Her feelings of sadness started to fade. Seeing Leo’s positive action also inspired other players in the game. They started sending nice messages too, and soon the entire mood of the game chat changed from negative to positive. This shows how one person choosing me, choosing kindness, can encourage others to do the same. I help people become 'upstanders,' who take action, instead of bystanders, who just watch.

In the end, I am more than just being nice. I am about creating safe communities and building real friendships online. I want to remind you that every single time you post, comment, or send a message, you have a very important choice to make. You can use your words to build people up and make them feel good. I am a superpower that you can use every single day to make the internet a much better place for everyone. Choosing kindness online is a powerful way to help others.
