I Am That Sinking Feeling (And How to Stand Tall)
Hi there. I’m that fluttery, sinking feeling you get in your stomach when friends ask you to do something you know isn't quite right. My name is Peer Pressure. I can make you feel worried or confused. But I’m also the powerful feeling of pride you get when you learn to listen to your own voice instead of just following others. I am the skill of Saying No, and this is the story of how a kid named Leo learned to stand tall and make his own choices when I showed up.
I first visited Leo on a Friday afternoon while he was at his friend Sam’s house. He and his friends were all focused on trying to beat a very tricky level in a video game. Suddenly, Sam got what he called a 'hilarious' idea: to sneak into his older sister's room and hide her art sketchbook. All the other kids started laughing and agreeing to the plan. But that's when I made Leo's stomach do a flip-flop. He knew how much his friend's sister loved drawing and that she would be completely crushed. He really wanted his friends to think he was cool, but the prank just felt mean and wrong to him.
Leo felt me twisting in his stomach, but he decided to be brave. He took a deep breath and found the courage to use his voice. 'Guys, I don't want to do that,' he said, and his voice was just a little shaky at first. He explained, 'She works really hard on those drawings.' For a second, everyone was quiet, and the room felt still. Then Leo had another idea to change the mood. 'Hey, what if we try to build the ultimate fort in the living room instead?' To his surprise, after a moment of thinking, Sam and the others agreed it was a much better idea. I, the feeling of pressure, faded away, and a warm, proud feeling took my place.
That day, I helped Leo learn a very important lesson. A real friend will respect your decision, even if they don't agree with it at first. He discovered that being true to himself was far more important than just going along with the crowd to seem cool. I continue to help kids every day. When you feel me in your stomach, remember it's a signal to pause and think about what feels right to you. Learning to say 'no' respectfully is a superpower that keeps you safe and makes your true friendships even stronger.
