A Guide to Stretching
Before I play a sport or even after I’ve been sitting for a while, I find it helpful to stretch. Stretching is a simple way to prepare my body for action and help it recover afterward. I think of it as a kind wake-up call for my muscles. When I stretch, I am carefully lengthening my muscles, which helps them become more flexible. This increased flexibility allows me to move more easily and helps prevent my body from feeling stiff or tight. A good way to understand this is to imagine a rubber band. If a rubber band is cold and you try to pull it quickly, it might snap. But if you warm it up and stretch it gently, it becomes flexible and can stretch very far without breaking. My muscles work in a similar way; preparing them with stretching helps them perform their best without getting hurt.
