The story

A Warm Hum from the Mountains

Hello. I am an alpaca. I am a very fluffy animal with soft fleece. My fleece is like a warm, cozy blanket that grows all over my body. It keeps me warm when the wind blows. I live high, high up in the cool Andes Mountains. My warm fleece is perfect for my mountain home.

I do not live alone. I live with my big family in a group called a herd. We all stay together and take care of each other. To talk, we make a soft sound. It is a gentle hum. Hummm. That is how we say hello to our friends. We spend our happy days eating fresh green grass. My alpaca family has lived with people for a very, very long time, since around the year 4000 BCE. We have been friends for many years.

I have a special gift to share. My gift is my warm, soft fleece. Once every year, people give me a gentle haircut. It feels nice and cool. They carefully collect my fleece to make wonderful things. People use my fleece to make warm clothes like sweaters, hats, and scarves. This is my special way of helping people stay warm, just like my fleece helps me. I am happy that I can share my gift of warmth with you.
