The story

A Giant's Story: My Life as an Argentinosaurus

Hello. My name is Argentinosaurus, and I was one of the biggest dinosaurs to ever walk the Earth. My adventure began about 95 million years ago, during a time called the Late Cretaceous Period. I hatched from an egg that was as big as a football. The world I was born into was so warm and green. My home was a beautiful place that people today call Patagonia, which is in South America. Can you imagine a world filled with giant plants and even bigger animals? That was my home, and it was an exciting place to grow up. The air was warm, the trees were tall, and every day was a new adventure waiting to happen. It was a wonderful time to be alive.

Being so enormous was quite an experience. To help my body grow big and strong, I needed to eat lots and lots of plants. I was a plant-eater, which is also called a herbivore. My neck was very long, which was perfect for reaching the tastiest leaves at the very top of the tallest trees. My legs were as thick and strong as tree trunks, and they had to be to hold up my heavy body as I walked. I didn't wander around all by myself. I roamed with my family in a big group called a herd. Sticking together helped us stay safe from large predators that might try to bother us. We would walk together, eat together, and look out for one another. It was a good life, moving slowly through the warm forests and plains with my family by my side.

My time on Earth was a very long time ago. After I lived my long life, my bones rested under the ground for millions and millions of years. As time passed, they slowly turned into hard fossils, like stones shaped just like my bones. They waited patiently underground for someone to find them. Then, one day, something incredible happened in the year 1987. A farmer named Guillermo Heredia was walking on his land in Argentina. He looked down and saw something amazing sticking out of the ground. It was one of my bones. It was a huge leg bone, and it was even taller than a person. He knew he had found something special from the world of dinosaurs.

After that big discovery in 1987, scientists came to study my fossil bones. They were so excited. In 1993, two of these scientists, called paleontologists, gave me my official name. Their names were José Bonaparte and Rodolfo Coria. They named me Argentinosaurus, which means “Argentina lizard,” because I was found in Argentina. I lived during the Late Cretaceous Period. Even though that was a very long time ago, my giant bones help everyone today imagine the incredible world of the dinosaurs. My story helps teach people just how amazing and gigantic life on our planet can be.
