Just want Betta Fish?
Hello there. My name is Betta, and I am a Betta fish. Some people also call me a Siamese fighting fish. My very first home was in the warm, shallow rice paddies of a country called Thailand, which is in Southeast Asia. I loved swimming through the calm water and hiding under the big green leaves that floated on the surface. It was the perfect, cozy home for a fish like me.
Have you seen my beautiful fins? They flow through the water like colorful ribbons, and my body shines with bright colors. But did you know that my wild ancestors from long ago were not as colorful as I am? I also have a secret superpower. I have a special part inside me called a labyrinth organ. This allows me to swim to the surface and take a gulp of air, just like you. This is very helpful because the water in my home can sometimes be low in oxygen. Sometimes, I also flare my gills and fins to make myself look bigger and more impressive.
One of my most important jobs is to be a builder. I don’t use sticks or stones; I build my nests out of bubbles. I carefully swim to the top of the water and blow each bubble one by one. Then, I stick them all together to create a floating nest. It looks like a little raft made of foam. This bubble nest creates a safe and floating home for my eggs, keeping them safe until they are ready to hatch into tiny baby fish.
Even a small fish like me has a big role in my ecosystem. I help keep the water clean by eating tiny insects and their larvae. Many people enjoy my beauty and my flowing fins. When you learn about me, you are also helping to protect the watery homes of all my wild cousins who still live in places around the world. We all help make the world a more beautiful and interesting place.
