My Life as a Caribou
Hi there! My name is Caribou, but some of you might know me by my other name, Reindeer. I live way up north where the world is covered in a blanket of snow for most of the year. I'm not alone, though! I live and travel with my family and friends in a big group called a herd. We are always on the move together.
It gets very chilly in my home, but I have the perfect outfit to keep me warm. My special coat is made of two layers of fur. My outer hairs are long and hollow, just like tiny straws. This traps warm air right next to my body to keep me cozy. It even helps me float when I swim across big rivers! My feet are special, too. I have big, wide hooves that work like snowshoes, so I don't sink into the deep snow. In the winter, the pads on my feet get rough and hard, which gives me extra grip when I walk on the slippery ice.
Every year, my herd and I go on a very, very long walk. It's called a migration! We travel farther than any other land animal on the whole Earth, sometimes for thousands of miles. We take this long journey so we can find the best food. In the summer, we munch on fresh green leaves and tasty grasses. But in the winter, we have to dig for our favorite snack: lichen. It's a special plant that grows right under the snow, and we use our strong hooves to scoop it out.
Have you seen the crown I wear on my head? Those are my antlers! What's really special about us caribou is that both boys and girls grow them. The boy caribou, who are called bulls, lose their antlers after the autumn is over. But the girl caribou, like me, keep ours all winter long. This is very helpful because it allows us to protect our food from others and to keep our little calves safe from harm.
My long journeys are very important for my home in the tundra. As I walk for many miles, I help spread seeds for new plants to grow all over the land. My digging for lichen and my grazing on grasses also helps keep the soil healthy. I am a traveler of the great north, and I am proud to be an important part of this beautiful, wild place. We all have a part to play in keeping our world wonderful.
