The story

A Day in the Life of the Golden Poison Frog

Hello from the rainforest. I’m a Golden Poison Frog, and I have a secret to share with you. My skin is a shiny, bright yellow, like a little drop of sunshine hopping on the forest floor. I live in a very special place, a small patch of rainforest on the coast of a country called Colombia. It’s warm and wet here, and I love it. My favorite thing to do is hop around on the soft, damp leaves that cover the ground. There are so many interesting things to see and explore. The leaves make a soft rustling sound under my feet as I search for my next meal or look for my family. This little corner of the world is my entire home, filled with tall trees, colorful flowers, and the sounds of other animals who live here with me.

My bright color isn’t just to look pretty, it’s actually a warning. It tells other animals, “Stay away, I’m not a good snack.” You see, I am one of the most poisonous animals in the world. But here’s my secret: I’m not born this way. I get my poison from the food I eat. I munch on special little bugs for lunch, like certain kinds of beetles that have a toxin inside them. When I eat them, their poison becomes my poison. It's stored in my skin and keeps me safe from animals who might want to eat me. It’s like having a superpower that protects me every single day. This defense means I don’t have to hide as much as other frogs, so I can be out and about during the day.

My life is quite busy. Unlike some frogs that are active at night, I am active during the daytime. I live in a small group with my family, and we like to stick together. Living in groups helps us stay safe and find food. When it’s time to have babies, the dads in my family are amazing parents. After the mom lays the eggs, the dad watches over them. Once the babies hatch into tiny tadpoles, he does something incredible. He lets them wiggle up onto his back, and he carries them to a safe place, like a little puddle of water collected in a leaf or a flower. This little pool becomes their first home where they can swim and grow big and strong until they become little frogs, just like me.

For a long time, only the people who lived near my home knew about me. But in 1978, scientists officially described my species and shared information about me with the whole world. It was an important year because it helped people understand how special I am. My story shows how important it is to protect my rainforest home. When the forest is healthy, my food is plentiful, and my family is safe. By taking care of the rainforest, people help protect me and all the other amazing creatures who live here. Every animal, no matter how small or bright, has an important job to do to keep the world in balance.
