Great Horned Owl

Hoo-hoo! It's me, a Great Horned Owl. Can you see my big, round, yellow eyes? They are super special and help me see everything when it is dark outside. All of my feathers are super soft, which keeps me warm. Do you see the fluffy tufts on my head? They might look like horns, but they are just feathers. They show everyone how I am feeling.

I am a nocturnal animal. That is a big word that means I love to be awake when the moon is out and you are sleeping. I am a silent flyer. My wings have special feathers that are soft and quiet, so I can fly without making a sound. This helps me surprise a yummy snack, like a little mouse, on the ground. I also have amazing hearing. My ears are so good I can hear the tiniest rustle in the leaves. I can also turn my head almost all the way around to look and listen for things without moving my body.

From my home high up in the trees, I sing my special song. Can you sing it with me? It goes, 'Hoo-hoo hoo hoo-hoo'. I live in a cozy nest that another bird made before me. Being a great hunter is my special job in the forest. By catching small animals, I help keep the whole forest happy and balanced. This is my important role, and I am proud to be the silent guardian of the night.
