Just want Marsupial?
Hello there! My name is Koala, and I am a special kind of animal called a marsupial. I live way up high in the tall, sweet-smelling eucalyptus trees of Australia. My home is a cozy branch where I can see the world below. I have soft, fuzzy gray fur that feels like a warm blanket, and big, fluffy ears that are great for listening to the forest sounds. My favorite feature is my large, dark nose. It’s not just for looking cute; it’s an amazing sniffer that helps me find the tastiest eucalyptus leaves for my dinner. I love my life in the trees, munching and snoozing all day long.
What makes me a marsupial? It’s my super special pouch! It’s like a built-in sleeping bag and nursery for my baby. When my baby, called a joey, is born, it is very, very tiny—about the size of a jellybean. Right away, the little joey crawls into my warm, safe pouch. It’s the coziest spot in the whole forest. For about six months, my joey stays tucked inside, drinking milk and growing bigger and stronger every day. After a while, when the joey is brave enough, it will start to peek its little head out to say hello to the big, wide world outside.
My diet is very simple, because I am a very picky eater. I only eat eucalyptus leaves. You might think that's boring, but I think they are delicious! For most other animals, these leaves are actually poisonous and would make them sick. But my body is special and has what it needs to break down the tough leaves safely. This food gives me just enough energy to climb and munch, but not much more. That is why I am such a great sleeper. I can sleep for up to 20 hours a day. It’s my way of saving up my energy. People who traveled to Australia from far away first wrote about seeing my ancestors way back in the year 1798. They were probably surprised to see us snoozing in the trees.

Living high up in the trees means I have to be a fantastic climber, and I am. My strong claws help me grip the bark as I move from branch to branch looking for the best leaves. I am a keeper of the forest. By munching on so many leaves, I help keep the eucalyptus trees healthy, which makes the whole forest a better place. My story shows how important it is to protect these forests. For me and all my koala friends, these trees are everything—they are our home, our restaurant, and our playground. By keeping the forests safe, you help keep us safe, too.
