Just want Platypus?
Hello! I’m a platypus, and I live in the beautiful country of Australia. I have to admit, I look a little bit funny! My body is a mix of a few different animals. I have a bill that looks just like a duck's, a wide, flat tail like a beaver, and webbed feet just like an otter. I might look like a mixed-up puzzle, but all my parts work perfectly together. I also have a very special secret that makes me different from most other mammals. Even though I have fur and feed my babies milk, I don't give birth to live babies. Instead, I lay eggs! It's one of the things that makes me so unique.
My home is a cozy burrow that I dig into the bank of a freshwater river. I love the water, and it's where I find all of my delicious food. When I'm ready to hunt, I take a deep breath and dive down into the cool river. I swim with my eyes, ears, and nose all shut tight so no water can get in. You might be wondering how I find my food if I can't see or hear! Well, my soft, rubbery bill has a superpower. It isn't for quacking like a duck's bill. My bill can feel the tiny electric buzzes that little worms and shrimp make when they move around in the mud at the bottom of the river. This special sense helps me find my dinner, even with everything shut!
It took people a long time to believe that I was a real animal. In the year 1799, when scientists in a faraway country called England saw the first drawings and skins of a platypus, they were very confused. They thought someone was playing a silly trick on them! They actually believed that a person had taken the body of an animal that looked like a beaver and had sewn a duck's bill onto its face. Isn't that funny? They couldn’t imagine that an animal like me could be real, but I am 100% real, from my bill to my tail!

My life in the river is very important. I have a special job in my ecosystem. Every day, I eat lots of little critters like worms, insects, and shrimp. By doing this, I help keep the number of these creatures just right, which keeps the rivers and streams where I live healthy and balanced for everyone. My story shows that being unique is a wonderful thing. Every creature, no matter how strange or funny-looking they might seem, has an important role to play in our amazing world.
