The story

A Rodent's Tale: The Accidental Gardener

Hi there! I'm a rodent, and I'm so happy to meet you. Being a rodent means I'm part of one of the biggest families in the whole animal kingdom! Can you believe it? Nearly half of all the different kinds of mammals on Earth are rodents. We come in all shapes and sizes. Some of my family members are tiny mice, scurrying quietly through the grass. Others are giant capybaras, who love to swim, and some are busy beavers, who build amazing dams in rivers. It feels so special to be part of such a large and interesting group with relatives all over the world.

My most special feature is something I use every single day: my teeth! My two big front teeth are called incisors, and they have a secret power—they never, ever stop growing. That might sound a little strange, but it’s perfect for me. Because they are always getting longer, I have to chew and gnaw on things all day long. I chew on hard nuts, tough plant stems, and even wood. This helps keep my teeth trimmed down to just the right size and keeps them super sharp. It’s like having my own built-in toolkit that I carry with me everywhere I go!

I have a very important job in nature, even if I don't always mean to do it. One of my favorite things to do is gather tasty seeds and nuts. When I find more than I can eat, I bury them in the ground to save for another day. But sometimes, I'm a little forgetful and can't remember where I hid all my snacks. That might sound like a problem, but it’s actually a wonderful thing! The seeds I forget about can sprout and grow into new plants and trees. By being forgetful, I become an accidental gardener for the forest, helping it become bigger and healthier.

My family has been around for a very, very long time. My ancestors first appeared around 60 million years ago, which was not long after the dinosaurs disappeared from the Earth. For all that time, we rodents have been helping our habitats. We are an important source of food for other animals, and by spreading seeds, we help forests grow. We are still busy doing our jobs today, helping to keep the whole world healthy and balanced. Our big family is a small but mighty part of nature.
