The story

The Story of Urchin the Sea Urchin

Hello there. My name is Urchin, and I'm a sea urchin. I live down at the bottom of the big, blue ocean. I look like a little round ball covered in pointy spines. My spines might look sharp, but they help keep me safe from bigger fish who might want to bother me. I'm like a little pin cushion of the sea.

Do you wonder how I move. It's a secret. I have hundreds of tiny, sticky tube feet underneath me. I use my feet to slowly crawl along rocks and the sandy floor. When I get hungry, I look for my favorite snack: yummy green algae that grows on the rocks. My mouth is on my belly, so it is easy to munch, munch, munch as I go.

My munching is a very important job. By eating lots of algae, I help keep the ocean floor clean. This helps beautiful kelp forests and coral reefs have room to grow. This makes a happy, healthy home for all my fishy friends. Being a spiky little helper is the best job in the world, and I am still helping keep the ocean clean today.
