The story

The Swimming Cat of Lake Van

Hello! I am a Turkish Van cat, and my story begins on the beautiful shores of Lake Van, the largest lake in my home country of Turkey. For centuries, my ancestors have lived in this region, developing into the special and ancient breed that I am today. My home is a land of sparkling water and rugged mountains, a perfect place for an adventurous cat like me. I have a very distinct look that makes me stand out. My fur is a brilliant, chalk-white color and feels as soft as cashmere. But I'm not all white. I have special colored patches on my head and on my long, fluffy tail. People who know about cats call this the 'Van pattern,' and it's a signature look for my breed. Another thing you might notice are my eyes. Sometimes, we have eyes that are two completely different colors. One might be a sparkling, clear blue like the waters of Lake Van, while the other is a warm, glowing amber, like the sun setting over the hills. It’s one of the many things that makes us so unique.

Now, I want to share my most famous secret with you, the one that surprises everyone. I absolutely love water! Most cats you know probably run away from a bath or a puddle, but not me. In fact, my relatives and I are famously known as 'Swimming Cats.' It’s a title we wear with pride. My body is perfectly suited for a dip in the lake. My cashmere-soft fur is naturally water-resistant, which means it doesn't get soaked easily and helps me glide through the water without getting cold. This special coat allows me to enjoy a good paddle whenever I feel like it. I also have very strong back legs. They aren't just for climbing and pouncing like other cats. I use them to push through the water with powerful kicks. These strong legs also help me jump incredibly high and play with lots of energy when I’m on dry land. It is so much fun to see the surprised look on people’s faces when they see me happily swimming. It’s not something you expect from a cat, and I think it makes my story even more special.

For a long time, my breed was a local secret, known only to the people living around Lake Van in Turkey. But that all changed in the year 1955. Two travelers from Great Britain, a photographer named Laura Lushington and a journalist named Sonia Halliday, were visiting my homeland. They were so charmed by my ancestors that they were given a pair of us to take home. They took them all the way back to England, which was a very long journey for a cat from Turkey. This was the beginning of our introduction to the rest of the world. Laura and Sonia began to show people how wonderful we were, and our popularity started to grow. It took some time, but by 1969, the cat-loving organizations in the United Kingdom officially recognized us as a special breed. After that, our fame spread, and soon, people all over the world wanted to know more about the beautiful 'Swimming Cats' from Turkey.

Today, I am proud to say that my breed is considered a national treasure in my home country of Turkey. People there work hard to protect us and make sure our breed stays healthy and strong for future generations. We are still quite a rare breed around the world, so meeting one of us is a very special occasion. For the families we live with, we bring so much joy with our playful energy and affectionate personalities. I hope my story reminds you that nature is full of wonderful surprises—like a cat who loves to swim. It shows that every single creature, no matter how big or small, has a unique and important story to tell. We all have something special that makes us who we are.
