Just want Turkish Van Cat?
Hello! My name is Van. I'm a Turkish Van cat, and I have a story to tell you. I come from a beautiful, sunny place far away in a country called Turkey. My ancestors have lived near the biggest lake there, Lake Van, for hundreds of years! We are known for our special coats. We are mostly a brilliant white, like fresh snow, but we have lovely patches of color on our heads and on our fluffy tails. Some of us even have a little colored spot on our shoulder, which people say is the thumbprint of God!
I have a secret that might surprise you. Unlike most other cats you know, I absolutely love water! It’s true! My fur is special; it's thick and feels like cashmere, and it's water-resistant, which helps me paddle around. Back home, my relatives would swim in the cool streams that flow into Lake Van to cool off on hot summer days. People were so surprised to see us swimming that they gave us the nickname 'The Swimming Cats.' We are also very playful and full of energy. We love to climb, jump, and chase toys, and maybe even splash in a puddle or two!
For a long, long time, the world outside of Turkey didn't know about us. But that all changed in the year 1955. Two travelers from Great Britain named Laura Lushington and Sonia Halliday visited my homeland and saw how unique we were. They were given a pair of my ancestors to take back home with them. It was a very long journey! Those first Van cats were brave, and because of them, people all over the world got to meet my amazing family. Soon, everyone wanted to know more about the beautiful swimming cats from Turkey.

Today, we are known all around the world, but we are still a special treasure in our home country of Turkey. We are a natural breed, which means we developed our special looks and love for water all on our own, without people changing us. I think that makes us pretty special. We are loving, smart, and make wonderful friends. I'm proud to be a Turkish Van cat, sharing my story and a little bit of Turkish sunshine wherever I go.
