The story

A Vicuña's Mountain Story

Hello there! I am a Vicuña, and I am so happy to meet you. I live way up high in a beautiful place called the Andes mountains. The air is so fresh and cool up here, it makes me want to run all day long! My legs are long and strong, and I love to zip super-fast across the big, grassy plains. Whee! It feels like I am flying. You might look at me and think of a camel or a llama. They are my cousins! We are related, but I am a little different. I am smaller than they are, and I am a wild animal, which means I live free in my mountain home.

My mountain home can get very chilly, especially when the wind blows. But I am never cold because I have a very special coat. My coat is made of wool that is super soft and very, very fine. It is one of the softest coats in the whole world! It keeps me all warm and cozy. I live with my family. We stay together in a small group, and we always take care of each other. We watch for any danger and keep each other safe. All day long, we walk together and look for food. Our favorite thing to eat is the tasty green grass that grows all over the mountains. Munch, munch, munch! It is delicious.

Eating grass is not just my lunch, it is also my very important job in the highlands where I live. You see, when I nibble on the grass, I help keep it just the right length. This makes the grass healthy and helps new grass grow fresh and green. When the grass is healthy, it helps everyone! It makes a good home for all the other plants and animals that live here with me in the mountains. I am a proud guardian of the Andes. I love helping to keep my home beautiful and full of life for all my friends. It is the best job in the world.
