The story

A Vicuña's Golden Fleece

Hello there. I am a Vicuña, and I live high up in the beautiful Andes Mountains. It can be very chilly here, but I don't mind at all. I have a special, super-soft coat that keeps me cozy and warm. My home is a wide-open plain where I live with my family in a big herd. We love to run and play together. I have a long neck that helps me see far across the land and big, curious eyes to watch for anything interesting. When I get hungry, I love to munch on my favorite food: the tough grass that grows all around my mountain home. It’s the perfect meal for a Vicuña like me.

My coat is more than just warm; it’s a treasure. My wool is one of the finest and softest in the entire world. Long, long ago, the ancient Inca people lived in these same mountains. They thought my wool was so special that they called it the 'cloth of gold.' They believed it was a precious gift from nature and treated my family with great respect. But after the Inca, times became very difficult for us. Many people wanted my beautiful wool for themselves. They were not as gentle as the Inca, and they hunted us until there were very few of us left. By the 1960s, my family was in great danger. We were very close to disappearing from the mountains forever, and we were all very scared.

Just when it seemed like all hope was lost, some kind people decided to help us. It was a wonderful, happy change. Around the year 1974, the countries here in South America all agreed that Vicuñas needed to be protected. To keep us safe, they created huge parks in the mountains just for us. These parks are special places where my family and I can live and run free without any fear. Now, people help us in a way that reminds me of the old Inca traditions. They give us a gentle 'haircut' called shearing, where they carefully trim my extra wool to use. It doesn't hurt at all. As soon as my haircut is done, I get to go right back to my family and continue playing on the plains.

Because so many people worked together to help us, our Vicuña families are big and strong again. Today, I am a symbol of how humans and animals can live together and help each other. When I nibble on the tough grasses, I help keep the mountain grasslands healthy for all the other animals that live here. My story is a happy one that reminds everyone that it is always possible to make a positive change. We can all work to protect nature and its amazing animals. I am proud to be a Vicuña, running free in my Andes mountain home.
