The story

Adam Smith

Hello there! My name is Adam Smith. I was born in a small seaside town in Scotland called Kirkcaldy in the year 1723. Even as a little boy, I absolutely loved to read books and learn about the world. My father passed away before I was born, so my dear mother raised me. She always encouraged my curiosity, and I spent hours and hours with my nose in a book, dreaming up big ideas.

I loved school so much that when I was only 14 years old, I went to a big school called the University of Glasgow. It was so exciting to be surrounded by so many books and clever teachers! After I finished my studies, I decided to become a professor myself. I enjoyed teaching students about how people think and what makes them happy. In 1759, I wrote my first important book, called The Theory of Moral Sentiments. It was all about a special feeling called sympathy—the way we can understand and share the feelings of others.

I traveled across Europe and saw how people in different countries lived and worked. It made me think a lot about jobs, money, and how things are made and sold. In 1776, I published my most famous book, The Wealth of Nations. In it, I shared a simple but powerful idea. Imagine you are making a pin. If one person does all the steps, it takes a very long time. But if one person cuts the wire, another person sharpens the point, and another puts the head on top, they can work together to make thousands of pins in one day! I believed that when people are free to do the job they are best at and then trade with each other, it helps everyone.

I spent the rest of my life writing and sharing my ideas. I lived to be 67 years old. Today, many people call me the 'Father of Economics.' My books are still read in schools all over the world, and my ideas continue to help people understand how to create a better and fairer world for everyone.
