The Fables of Aesop
Hello! My name is Aesop. You might know me from my stories, but I lived a very, very long time ago, in a land called ancient Greece. I was born around the year 620 BCE. That’s more than 2,500 years ago! Life was very different back then. We didn't have cars or electricity, but we did have stories. And I loved telling them. The stories I told were special; they were called fables. They were short tales, usually with talking animals, that always had an important lesson to teach.
For much of my life, I was not a free man. I was a slave on a beautiful Greek island called Samos. It was a difficult life, but I learned to use my mind and my words to help me. Instead of arguing or getting into trouble, I would tell a story to make a point. If I wanted to warn someone about being greedy, I might tell a tale about a foolish fox. If I wanted to show the importance of being kind, I might tell a story about a mighty lion helped by a tiny mouse. My masters, named Xanthus and Iadmon, saw that my stories contained a lot of wisdom. Eventually, my master Iadmon was so impressed that he granted me my freedom. I could finally travel and share my stories with the world.
Have you ever heard the story of 'The Tortoise and the Hare'? That’s one of mine! It teaches us that 'slow and steady wins the race.' Or what about 'The Boy Who Cried Wolf'? That fable warns us about the trouble that comes from telling lies. These were the kinds of stories I told. I never wrote them down myself; in my time, stories were passed along by telling them out loud. Fathers and mothers would tell them to their children, who would grow up and tell them to their own children. For hundreds of years, my fables were shared this way, traveling from person to person and town to town. Each story had a 'moral,' which is a little piece of advice to help you be a better, wiser person. I believed that a good story was the best way to teach an important lesson.
As a free man, I traveled and even advised a king named Croesus. My stories and my advice took me to many new places. One of my last journeys, around the year 564 BCE, was to a famous city called Delphi. It was a very important place, built on the side of a mountain. But while I was there, I got into a serious disagreement with the people of the city. I told them a fable they did not like, and they became very angry with me. It was a sad end to my travels, but it was not the end of my stories.
I lived to be about 56 years old. Even though my own life ended in Delphi, my fables began a new journey all on their own. People kept telling them, and eventually, they were written down and gathered into books. Today, my stories are known all over the world. They are read in schools, shared in homes, and have been translated into hundreds of languages. I hope that when you hear one of my fables, it makes you think, and maybe even smile. My greatest wish was that my stories would help people learn to be kinder and wiser, and I am happy to know they are still doing that today.
