The story

Alan Shepard: A Trip to the Moon

Hello! My name is Alan Shepard. When I was a little boy, I loved to watch airplanes soar through the big blue sky. Vroom! I dreamed that one day, I would get to be the pilot and fly high above the clouds. I worked very hard in school so I could make my big dream come true.

When I grew up, I learned to fly planes, and then I got a super special job—I became an astronaut! I got to wear a shiny silver spacesuit and a big helmet. In the year 1961, I climbed inside my spaceship, which I named Freedom 7. After a big countdown... 3... 2... 1... BLAST OFF! I zoomed up, up, up and became the first American to ever go into space. Looking down at our big, beautiful Earth from my window was amazing!

My adventures didn't stop there! A few years later, in 1971, I got to fly on an even bigger rocket for a mission called Apollo 14. This time, I went all the way to the Moon! I was the fifth person to ever walk on its dusty, gray surface. It was so much fun to bounce around in my big spacesuit. I even did something silly—I brought a golf club and hit two golf balls. They flew for a long, long time in the Moon's light gravity!

I lived a very long and exciting life for 74 years, full of amazing adventures. People remember me as a brave explorer who flew into space and walked on the Moon. I hope my story inspires you to look up at the stars, dream big, and know that you can do incredible things, too.
