The story

Anders Celsius

Hello! My name is Anders Celsius. When I was a little boy in a chilly country called Sweden, I loved looking up at the sky. The twinkling stars and the glowing moon were my friends. I always asked questions like, 'Why is today warm?' and 'Why is tonight so cold?' I knew I wanted to be a scientist and find the answers!

I wanted a way to measure how hot or cold something was. Was the water for my tea very hot? Was the snow outside very cold? I decided to make a special kind of ruler for temperature! I put it inside a glass tube called a thermometer. I made a scale with numbers from 0 to 100. This helped everyone know exactly how warm or chilly it was, just by looking at a number.

I lived to be 42 years old, and my idea is still used today! When your grown-up checks the weather, they might say, 'It's 25 degrees Celsius outside!' That's me! Celsius is my last name. My special ruler helps you know if you need to wear your warm, fuzzy coat or your super-cool sunglasses. I'm so happy my invention still helps you every day.
