The story

Archimedes: The Boy Who Shouted Eureka!

Hello. My name is Archimedes. I was a thinker and an inventor who lived a very long time ago in a Greek city called Syracuse. I was born around the year 287 BCE. Even when I was just a boy, I loved to solve puzzles. I would look at everything around me with curious eyes. I always wanted to know how things worked. I would ask questions like 'how does that happen?' and 'why does it do that?'. I never stopped asking questions, and that helped me make many amazing discoveries.

I want to tell you my most famous story. The king of my city, whose name was Hiero II, had a beautiful new crown. He wanted to know if it was made of pure gold, but he told me I could not break it to find out. This was a very tricky puzzle. I thought about it for a long, long time. One day, I decided to take a bath. As I stepped into the tub, I noticed the water level got higher and some of it even splashed out onto the floor. Suddenly, I had an idea. I realized that I could find out what the crown was made of by putting it in water and seeing how much water it pushed away. I was so excited that I jumped up and shouted, 'Eureka.'. In my language, that means, 'I've found it.'.

I loved using my brain to create things that could help people. One of my favorite inventions was the Archimedes Screw. It looked like a giant corkscrew inside a tube. When you turned it, it could lift water from a low place, like a river, up to a high place, like a farmer's field. This made it much easier for farmers to water their crops. I also studied how levers and pulleys work. I figured out that with the right lever, even one person could move something incredibly heavy. I showed everyone how it was possible to move a whole ship all by myself using these simple machines.

My ideas were not just for fun puzzles. Around the year 212 BCE, they were even used to help protect my city during a war. I lived to be about 75 years old. Even though that was a very long time ago, my discoveries in math and science are still important today. Engineers use my ideas about levers and water to build amazing things like bridges and ships. And sometimes, when people have a wonderful, brilliant idea, they still shout 'Eureka.'. They remember my exciting discovery in the bathtub.

About

Archimedes was an ancient Greek mathematician, physicist, engineer, inventor, and astronomer, considered one of the leading scientists in classical antiquity. He is famous for his work on levers, and while he is often said to have had a 'Eureka!' moment when he discovered how things float, the exact details of this discovery are not completely clear. He also created many inventions used to defend his home city of Syracuse.
