The story

Archimedes: The Thinker of Syracuse

Hello! My name is Archimedes, and I was a thinker and inventor from the ancient Greek city of Syracuse. I was born a very long time ago, around the year 287 BCE. My father's name was Phidias, and he was an astronomer, which means he studied the stars. He taught me to look up at the night sky and wonder. From the time I was a young boy, I was fascinated by the world around me. I didn't just want to see things; I wanted to understand them. Numbers, shapes, and puzzles were like games to me, and I spent my days trying to figure out how everything worked.

One of the most famous stories about me began with a problem from my friend, King Hiero II. He had been given a beautiful new crown and was told it was made of pure gold. But he had a suspicion that the crown maker had cheated him by mixing in a less valuable metal. He asked me, 'Archimedes, can you tell me if this crown is pure gold without melting it down?' This was a very tricky puzzle. I thought about it for days. The answer came to me when I was least expecting it—while I was getting into my bathtub. As I lowered myself in, I saw the water level rise and spill over the side. Suddenly, I understood. I realized that an object's volume—the amount of space it takes up—could be measured by how much water it pushes aside, or displaces. I could compare the volume of the crown to the volume of a pure gold block of the same weight. I was so excited by my discovery that I leaped out of the bath and ran through the streets, shouting 'Eureka!', which in Greek means 'I have found it!'.

My mind was always buzzing with ideas for new inventions. I became fascinated with the power of levers and pulleys. A lever is a simple bar that helps you lift heavy things, and I understood that with a long enough lever, the power to move things was almost limitless. I once famously said, 'Give me a place to stand, and I will move the Earth.' I also designed a tool called the Archimedes Screw. It looked like a giant corkscrew inside a tube, and when you turned it, it could lift water from a low place to a high one, which was very helpful for farmers. My inventions weren't just for peaceful tasks. Around the year 214 BCE, when Roman ships attacked my home city of Syracuse, I used my knowledge to help defend it. I designed powerful machines, including a giant crane with a grappling hook known as the 'Claw of Archimedes,' which could lift enemy ships right out of the water.

Even with all my inventions, my greatest love was always mathematics. To me, the world of numbers and shapes was the most beautiful and interesting place to explore. I spent countless hours drawing circles, spheres, and cylinders, trying to understand the rules that governed them. One of my proudest achievements was calculating a very accurate value for a special number called Pi, which you see written as the Greek letter π. Pi is incredibly important for understanding circles, and my work helped future mathematicians for centuries. For me, the thrill of solving a difficult math problem and finding a clear, perfect answer was one of the greatest joys in life.

My life came to an end during the capture of Syracuse in the year 212 BCE. I lived to be about 75 years old. Although my time on Earth was over, my ideas were not. The principles I discovered about physics, mathematics, and engineering have lived on for more than two thousand years. Today, scientists and inventors still use my work when they build ships, design machines, or solve complex problems. My 'Eureka!' moment is still remembered all over the world as a perfect symbol of that wonderful feeling when a brilliant discovery suddenly flashes into your mind.
