The story

Bartolomeu Dias: The Explorer of the Stormy Cape

Hello! My name is Bartolomeu Dias, and I was an explorer. I was born in a country called Portugal around the year 1450. Ever since I was a little boy, I loved watching the big ships sail in and out of the harbor. I dreamed of having my own adventures on the big, blue ocean and discovering new places. At that time, our king, John II, had a very important mission: he wanted to find a new way to sail from Portugal to a faraway land called India.

In August of 1487, the king chose me for the job! He asked me to take my ships and my brave crew and sail all the way down the coast of a huge continent called Africa. No one from my country had ever sailed to the very bottom, and we didn't know if it was even possible to go around it. For months, we sailed south, but then a giant storm hit! For 13 days, huge waves tossed our ships, and the wind blew us far away from land. We were scared and lost in the middle of the ocean. When the storm finally calmed down, I steered our ships east, but there was no land. So, I turned north, and we finally saw it! We had been blown so far south that we had gone right around the tip of Africa without even knowing it.

My crew was very tired and wanted to go home, so we turned our ships around. On our way back, in 1488, we saw the very bottom point of Africa. It was a huge, rocky cliff. Because of the scary storm, I named it the 'Cape of Storms.' When we finally got back to Portugal, King John II was thrilled! He knew my discovery was very important. But he thought 'Cape of Storms' was too scary. He renamed it the 'Cape of Good Hope' because it gave everyone hope that a sea route to India was finally possible.

My voyage opened up a new map of the world. Because of my discovery, another explorer named Vasco da Gama was able to sail all the way to India a few years later. I continued to sail on other voyages. I lived to be about 50 years old. Today, people remember me as the navigator who bravely sailed through a mighty storm to find a new path on the sea, connecting different parts of our amazing world.
