Just want Bertha Benz?
Hello! My name is Bertha Benz. A long time ago, my husband, Karl, built something new and exciting: a car! It didn’t need a horse to pull it. It went chug-a-chug-a-vroom all by itself. But some people thought it was too noisy and a little bit scary. They weren't sure if it was useful.
I knew the car was wonderful, so I had a secret plan. One morning in the summer of 1888, before the sun woke up, I quietly woke up my two sons. We tiptoed to the workshop and pushed the car out onto the street so we wouldn't wake up Karl. We were going on a big trip to visit Grandma! It was the very first long car ride in the whole world. When we ran out of 'car juice,' I found some at a pharmacy. When a part got stuck, I fixed it with my hatpin! Everyone we passed was so surprised to see us riding in a car without a horse.
Our trip showed everyone that cars weren't scary—they were amazing for going on adventures! After my journey, lots of people wanted a car just like ours. I lived a very long and happy life, to be 95 years old. People remember me today for being brave and showing the world how much fun it is to explore new roads.
