The story

Camillo di Cavour: The Dreamer Who Built a Country

Hello! My name is Camillo. I was born a long, long time ago, in the year 1810. When I was a little boy, I lived in a place called Piedmont. It was like one small piece of a big puzzle. All around my home were other little pieces. The people in all the pieces spoke the same language and ate similar yummy food, but they were not connected. They were not one big country yet.

I had a giant dream! I wanted to take all those little puzzle pieces and fit them together. My dream was to make one big, wonderful country called Italy. I believed everyone would be stronger and happier if they were all together. It was a big job, like being the captain of a team. I worked with our king, whose name was Victor Emmanuel II. Together, we talked to lots of people to share our idea. We planned and worked very, very hard to make our dream come true.

And guess what? We did it! In the year 1861, all the puzzle pieces clicked into place. We created the country of Italy! I was so happy and proud. I became the country's very first leader, called a Prime Minister. My work helped bring so many people together as one team. I lived to be 50 years old. Even today, people remember me as one of the helpers who built the beautiful country of Italy.
