The story

Chandragupta Maurya: The Boy Who Built an Empire

Hello. My name is Chandragupta Maurya. I was born a very long time ago, around the year 340 BCE, in a land that is now part of India. When I was a boy, our country was divided into many small kingdoms. The ruler of the biggest one, the Nanda Empire, was not very kind to his people. One day, I met a very wise teacher named Chanakya. He saw something special in me. He believed that I could be a great leader who could unite everyone and make our land a better place.

Chanakya became my guide and my best friend. Together, we had a big idea: to create one giant, strong, and happy empire for our people. It was not an easy job. First, we had to gather a big army of brave soldiers who believed in our dream. We trained very hard and planned everything carefully. Around the year 322 BCE, we marched to the capital city and challenged the Nanda king. After a great battle, we won. That was the beginning of my new empire, the Mauryan Empire.

As the first emperor of the Mauryan Empire, I had a very important job. I wanted to make sure everyone in my empire was safe and treated fairly. With Chanakya’s help, I built a strong government to take care of the people. We created new roads so people could travel and trade goods easily with each other. We even made one type of money for the whole empire to use. My empire grew bigger and bigger, stretching across almost all of India. Our capital city, Pataliputra, was one of the biggest and most beautiful cities in the whole world at that time.

After I had been emperor for many years, I felt I had done my job. I had created a strong and peaceful empire for my people, just as I had dreamed. Around the year 297 BCE, I decided it was time for a change in my life. I wanted to live a simple and peaceful life. So, I passed my throne to my son, Bindusara. I became a Jain monk. Instead of ruling a kingdom, I spent my days learning about peace and how to be kind to all living things.

I lived a long and full life. After I was gone, my son and then my famous grandson, Ashoka, continued to rule the empire I had built. The Mauryan Empire became one of the greatest in the history of India, and it all started with the dream of a young boy and his wise teacher. People remember me today as the person who united India and created its first great empire. My story shows that with courage and a good friend to help you, you can do amazing things.
