Just want Charlemagne?
Hello! My name is Charles, but you might know me by my famous name, Charlemagne, which means 'Charles the Great.' I was born a long, long time ago, around the year 747, in the kingdom of the Franks. My father was the king, Pepin the Short, so I was a prince! I loved to ride horses and learn how to be a strong leader. In the year 768, when my father passed on, my brother and I became the new kings. A few years later, in 771, my brother also passed away, and I became the one and only king of all the Franks.
As king, I had a big dream. I wanted to bring many different groups of people together to create one large, strong, and peaceful kingdom. My kingdom grew and grew as I united lands that are now countries like France, Germany, and Italy. I wanted everyone in my kingdom to be safe and to follow the same fair rules. I led my armies in many battles to protect our lands and help my kingdom expand. It was important to me that we build something that would last for a very long time.
I believed that learning was one of the most important things in the world. I wanted everyone, not just princes and lords, to have a chance to learn how to read and write. So, I invited the smartest teachers and scholars to my court in my favorite city, Aachen. We built new schools and libraries and created beautiful books. Because I had created such a large and Christian kingdom, the leader of the church, Pope Leo III, had a special surprise for me. On Christmas Day in the year 800, while I was visiting the city of Rome, he placed a golden crown on my head and named me Emperor of the Romans. It was one of the proudest days of my life!

I ruled as emperor for many years, always working to keep my empire strong and full of knowledge. After a long and full life, I passed away in the year 814. I lived to be about 67 years old. People still remember me as Charlemagne, one of the greatest leaders of the Middle Ages. Because I brought so many different lands and people together, some even call me the 'Father of Europe.' My dream of a united and educated kingdom helped shape the world we live in today.
