The story

The Story of Charlemagne

Hello! My name is Charles, but as time went on, people began to call me Charles the Great, or Charlemagne. I was born around the year 748 in a large territory called the kingdom of the Franks. My father was Pepin the Short, and he was a very powerful king. From a young age, I watched him and learned everything I could about what it meant to be a strong and fair leader for our people. I knew that one day, I would have great responsibilities on my shoulders, and I prepared for that my whole life.

When my father passed away in the year 768, the kingdom was passed down to me and my brother, Carloman. We became the new kings and ruled the land together, which was a very big job for two brothers to share. We had to make important decisions and keep our people safe. But just a few years later, in 771, my brother sadly died. Suddenly, I was the one and only king of all the Franks. I stood alone as the ruler, and I had big dreams for my kingdom. I wanted to make it stronger, larger, and more united than it had ever been before.

For most of my life, I was a warrior king. This meant I spent many years traveling with my armies to protect the borders of my kingdom and to expand our lands. It was very important to me to keep my people safe from enemies. My goal was to unite many different groups of people who lived all across the land. I brought the Lombards, who lived in what is now Italy, and the Saxons, who lived to the north, into my kingdom. I wanted to bring everyone together under one rule and one Christian faith. My dream was to create a large, peaceful empire where people could live and work together safely.

One of the most important and surprising days of my entire life happened on Christmas Day in the year 800. I was in the great city of Rome, visiting for the holiday. As I was in a church praying, something incredible happened. Pope Leo III walked up to me, and he placed a beautiful golden crown on my head. He then announced to everyone that I was the new Emperor of the Romans. This was a huge honor. It meant that my kingdom was now seen as being as powerful and important as the famous Roman Empire from long ago.

While I was known for my battles, I believed that learning was just as important as being a strong warrior. To be honest, I always found it a bit tricky to learn how to write myself, but I was determined that everyone in my empire should have the chance to get an education. So, I invited the smartest scholars from all over Europe to my court in the city of Aachen. A famous scholar named Alcuin came to help me. Together, we opened schools for children and adults, and we had artists and writers create beautiful books filled with knowledge.

I ruled for over 40 years, working hard to build a strong and educated empire. I lived to be around 66 years old and passed away in my favorite city of Aachen in the year 814. After I was gone, people remembered me for uniting much of Western Europe under one rule and for starting a new age of learning and art. Because my empire helped shape the lands that would one day become the countries of France, Germany, and Italy, some people have even called me the 'Father of Europe.' My hope was always to build something that would last, and my story shows how one person's vision can help shape the world for centuries to come.
