The story

Charles Lindbergh: The Lone Eagle

Hello! My name is Charles Lindbergh, but some people called me 'Lucky Lindy.' I was born on February 4th, 1902, in Detroit, Michigan. When I was a little boy, I didn't play with regular toys. I loved taking things apart, like my family's car, just to see how all the metal pieces fit together. I was fascinated by engines and how they made things go!

As I grew up, my love for machines turned into a love for airplanes. In 1922, I decided to leave college to learn how to fly. It was the most exciting thing I had ever done! I even became a 'barnstormer,' which is a pilot who does tricks in the air for crowds. Later, I got a very important job as an airmail pilot, flying letters and packages through all kinds of weather. I had to be very brave to fly in storms and fog, but I loved being up in the sky.

One day, I heard about a big prize of $25,000 for the first person to fly an airplane all the way from New York City to Paris, France, without stopping. That's across the huge Atlantic Ocean! No one had ever done it before, and many people thought it was impossible. But I knew I had to try it. I helped design a special, small plane and named it the Spirit of St. Louis. On the morning of May 20th, 1927, I took off all by myself. I flew for more than 33 hours, through fog and storms, with no one to talk to.

When I finally saw the lights of Paris on May 21st, 1927, I was so happy! I had made it. I landed my plane, and a huge crowd of people was there to cheer for me. They were so excited that they lifted me onto their shoulders! My flight showed everyone that traveling long distances by air was possible. It was a big moment for flying. I became famous all around the world overnight for being the first person to fly solo across the Atlantic.

After my big flight, I kept flying and exploring new routes for airplanes to travel. I also worked to help protect our beautiful planet. I lived to be 72 years old. Today, people remember me for being brave and for helping to make our world feel a little smaller by connecting people through air travel.
